Financial Literacy for Children

Purpose: The Salvation Army Chartiers Valley Service Center is collaborating with Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club to teach a one-time program to local children, ages 11-14 how to attend to their personal finances.

Date and Time: Monday July 13th- Friday July 17th, 2015 from 10:00 A.M.-1P.M.

Price: The camp will be free of charge.

Availability: There will be enough slots available to accommodate between 8 and 10 children.

Sponsor: This camp will be entirely sponsored by Carnegie-Collier Rotary.

Format: This is a 5 day immersion camp using an informal classroom style where children will learn by using games, skits, and spending plans. It will end with the child choosing a charity of their liking to donate money to using a gift card given to them by the Rotary. Students will have a chance, with the parent’s as a co-signer, to open their very own bank account at a bank of their choosing. WesBanco is currently offering a Minor Savings Account plan and will give the child a $10 deposit if the parent opens the account with at least $10. The account has to remain open for at least 90 days.
Goals: To give awareness to children about their financial attitudes, decision making skills, wants/needs. They will learn why and how to save and cut down on spending. They will also learn the importance of tithing by donating to their favorite charity.

Partnership Roles: Develop curriculum, finance project, provide food for the children and run the daily camp.
Collateral Benefits of the Program: Teaching children the basics of saving and spending money at a young age can save them from financial heartache and loss. The participants are empowered to make their own financial choices and weigh the importance of their decisions.  Teaching low-income children will not only benefit their own lives, but the lives of generations to come. In addition, parents will have the week to themselves while their children are attending a free camp with The Salvation Army Chartiers Valley Service Center and the Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club.

Joint Club Meeting & Carlynton HS Choir
In keeping with our annual tradition, on December 4th, we had a joint meeting with Greentree and Bridgeville Rotary Club to celebrate the holiday season. We were joined by the highly talented choir students from Carlyton High School for some caroling. This was the 20th year when the students from Carlynton HS Choir enthralled the CC Rotary audience and brought in holiday cheer
